The citizens of Rome witnessed one of the most fascinating natural scenes – thousands of birds covered the sky, creating a shape that changes from second to second. This phenomenon is known as murmuration and occurs when birds (most often starlings) fly in large groups, synchronized, almost like a dance.
Such scenes are not uncommon in Italy during the winter months, but they continue to delight and shock passers-by again and again. The sound of wings, the change of light and the feeling of collective movement create an impression that can hardly leave anyone indifferent.
Although they seem random, scientists say that the birds in a flock move according to rules that include the distance, speed and direction of neighboring birds, thus creating almost perfect harmony.
At a time when we spend most of our days staring at screens, this view of the sky reminds us how alive, powerful and still capable of taking our breath away.
