A mother was determined to help her daughter with a rare birthmark discover her own beauty

Each of us is born with our own unique characteristics that make us beautiful in our own special way. The more society accepts us, the more we learn to embrace what makes us different from others.

Nicole Lucas Hallson, a loving mother to two children Asher and Winry, is on a mission to show the world that imperfections are part of what makes us perfect. Her goal is to show everyone that her daughter, who has a rare birthmark, is beautiful just the way she is.

Winry was born with congenital melanocytic nevi (CMN), a rare birthmark that covers a quarter of her face. At 13 months old, Winry stands out for this mark, which she has had since birth. Nicole, a teacher, remembers being surprised and worried when she first saw the mark after Winry’s delivery in February 2021.

“I had a pretty normal pregnancy with a little morning sickness, but nothing unusual”, Nicole shared on her blog. When the nurses handed her Winry, everything seemed fine until Nicole noticed the birthmark. At first she thought it might just be a bruise, but then she realized it looked more like a birthmark.

Nicole admits she was worried at first. “I had never seen anything like it before and was worried it might be dangerous”, she writes. But the nurses had not raised any concerns and her baby was generally healthy.

According to the National Organization for Rare Diseases, CMN can appear as patches of varying colors and sizes on any part of the body.

Nicole and her partner want to celebrate Winry’s unique qualities and encourage others to embrace what makes them different. “It’s an important lesson for children to show them that it’s OK to be different”, Nicole says, explaining how she wants her daughter’s story to make children with birthmarks or other differences feel seen and represented.

Although Winry’s birthmark could increase her risk of skin cancer, Nicole is more concerned about her daughter’s potential exposure to bullying as she gets older. “Her health and happiness are our priority”, she said, explaining that they are taking extra precautions to protect Winry’s skin.

Despite all the challenges, Winry’s bright, happy spirit shines through. “She’s always giggling and seems so full of joy”, Nicole says. “She’s already quite talkative and has a cheeky side, so we’re in for an adventure.”
