Abandoned castle in Czech Republic

Hořín Castle, originally built in the Baroque style, was transformed into a Rococo masterpiece in the late 17th century at the behest of Count Jakob von Czernin.

In addition to the main castle, agricultural structures were later integrated around the courtyard, reinforcing the overall architectural coherence of the property. In the late 18th century, ownership passed to the Lobkowicz family, who still own it today.

The castle is located in the village of Hořín, near the confluence of the Vltava and the Elbe and about 2 km from Mělník and 40 km from Prague, in the middle of a 10-hectare park.

A baroque hunting lodge was originally built on this site between 1699 and 1720 under the direction of Count Heřman Jacob Czernin, with design contributions by Giovanni Battista Alliprandi and subsequent renovations by F.M. Kaňka.

The interior of the castle features works of art by F.M. to see. Schiffner and extensions and improvements by his brother Antonín, which included the addition of two pavilions connected by diagonal corridors, one served as guest accommodation and the other was converted into a chapel.

The surrounding agricultural buildings, which were originally used as stables, contribute to the castle’s historically significant architectural ensemble. Particularly noteworthy are the Rococo “stone rooms” from 1760 – 1763, some of which have been preserved on the ground floor.

The main building consists of three upper floors and a basement with a total of 10,000 square meters of usable space. The 2,300 square meter ground floor includes a restaurant, private rooms and accommodation. The well-preserved Chapel of St. John of Nepomuk serves as both a venue for religious ceremonies and a concert hall.

The first floor has 2,200 square feet of space suitable for hotel rooms and private spaces, while the second floor offers 1,200 square feet for luxury rooms or suites. The third floor offers panoramic views over an area of 750 square meters.

The spacious basement with an area of 1,700 square meters could be converted into wellness facilities or wine cellars.

The castle is located near the Kokořínsko nature reserve and offers breathtaking views of Mělník Castle and Říp Mountain. It is conveniently located 40 km from Prague’s Václav Havel Airport.

Possible uses for the castle include converting it into a luxury hotel with historic charm, developing wellness areas in the cellars, converting outbuildings into horse stables or riding arenas with ample parking, or converting the property into a high-quality retirement home or Alzheimer’s center.
