Currently, at 74, Agnetha enjoys a quiet life in Sweden but remains musically active and continues to create and release new material. ABBA’s appeal spans generations, making it impossible to pick just one favorite song. The group’s versatility ensures that there is a song for every mood – whether happy, melancholic or thoughtful.

Interestingly, after ABBA broke up, its members retreated from the public eye. Although they released music sporadically, they mostly pursued a more private lifestyle. So what happened to Agnetha after ABBA’s heyday and how did she find her way into the group? Here’s a glimpse into the life of Agnetha Fältskog.

Agnetha was born on April 5, 1950 in Jönköping, Sweden, the eldest of two daughters of Knut and Birgit. Her love of music blossomed early; by the age of five she had written her first song about two little trolls. She continued to pursue her passion by taking music lessons and singing in the local church choir.

At 13, Agnetha formed a band with friends called The Cambers, performing at community events. She later joined the folk music group Bernt Enghardt and toured Sweden. Balancing her job as a telephone operator with music proved challenging, especially during nighttime performances. After she passed out from exhaustion, her mother urged her to choose between a conventional job and pursuing music full-time. Agnetha chose the latter.

At 17, Agnetha released her debut single “Jag var så kär” (I was so in love), which quickly topped the Swedish charts. This caught the attention of Björn Ulvaeus, who would later become her partner. “I remember hearing her voice; it was magical”, Benny Andersson told a BBC documentary.

As the romance between Agnetha and Björn blossomed, Benny fell in love with Anni-Frid Lyngstad. The four musicians initially worked together without forming a band, but after recording “People Need Love” in 1972, they began to gain momentum. Their entry into the Swedish music competition Melodifestivalen with “Ring, Ring” marked a turning point and led to their Europe-wide fame.

In 1974 they won the Eurovision Song Contest with “Waterloo”, cementing their identity as ABBA. Agnetha married Björn in 1971 and they had their first child, Linda, in 1973, navigating the challenges of parenthood amidst their growing fame.

Amid ABBA’s storming success, Agnetha expressed her gratitude for not winning Melodifestivalen earlier as her date with Linda was approaching. Balancing motherhood and a global career was no easy task as she and Björn often left their children behind on tour.

The group’s hits, including “SOS”, “Mamma Mia”, and “Dancing Queen”, catapulted them to world fame. But in 1979, when Agnetha and Björn’s marriage fell apart, they continued to perform professionally. The poignant “The Winner Takes It All”, about their divorce, showed Agnetha’s emotional depth.

After the release of their greatest hits album, ABBA decided to take a break. During this time, Agnetha started a solo career and enjoyed success with songs such as “Wrap Your Arms Around Me”. But she eventually withdrew from the limelight and sought a quieter life on an island outside Stockholm.

Although her decision to retire from fame was seen as mysterious, Agnetha herself has expressed frustration with that notion. “I’m not mysterious; I’m just down to earth”, she said. Now a grandmother of three, she cherishes the time she spends with her grandchildren, who love to sing with her but are largely unaware of her glorious past.
