Cher struggled with Chaz’s coming out as gay and reacted strongly when he first revealed his identity. Over time, however, their bond grew stronger as they navigated his gender transition together. Chaz was born Chastity Bono on March 4, 1969, and rose  to fame through appearances on the Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour.

As a child, Chaz felt different from his peers and had difficulty bonding with them. At 18, he came out as a lesbian, but later realized he identified as a man. Cher admitted that she had a hard time accepting this at first, but eventually accepted Chaz’s path, even talking about a “grief period” over the loss of her daughter.

Chaz’s gender transition included a successful career in entertainment, most notably becoming the first transgender man on  Dancing with the Stars in 2011.  He also faced personal challenges, including weight issues. His health journey began in earnest during his gender transition and resulted in significant weight loss, although this came with the challenge of excess skin.
