In 1996, a remarkable act of charity at the Brookfield Zoo in Illinois garnered worldwide attention. Binti Jua, a 169-kilogram western lowland gorilla, showed incredible compassion when a three-year-old boy accidentally fell seven meters into her enclosure, severely injuring himself.
As panic broke out among zoo visitors, Binti Jua instinctively approached the unconscious infant, gently rocking it while keeping other gorillas at a distance. With her own baby Koola on her back, she carried the boy to a safe place near the enclosure entrance so that zookeepers and paramedics could rescue him unharmed.

The rescue, captured on video, went viral and garnered Binti Jua great admiration. Some attributed her zoo training, others viewed her actions as pure altruism. Either way, she became a symbol of compassion and refuted the stereotype of gorillas as aggressive creatures.
Despite his injury, the boy made a full recovery, while Binti Jua rose to prominence as an unlikely hero. Her actions remind us that empathy transcends species boundaries and that kindness can arise in the most unexpected places.
