In a heartwarming tale that unfolded back in 2016, an endearing discovery took place on the streets of Thailand. A tiny, lone kitten captured the attention of a local family enjoying their evening.
Intrigued by the peculiar appearance of the little feline, the family recognized that this was no ordinary cat and promptly contacted The Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand (WFFT), an esteemed animal organization.
Upon closer examination, the experts from WFFT identified the kitten as a fishing cat, a distinct species teetering on the edge of extinction. Unlike typical domestic kittens, this wild cat has the potential to grow twice the size and harbors a profound affinity for marine life, particularly in its penchant for hunting and consuming fish.
According to the IUCN Red List, the fishing cat (Prionailurus viverrinus) is a medium-sized wild cat native to South and Southeast Asia, classified as Vulnerable since 2016. Its population faces threats from the destruction of wetlands, experiencing a drastic decline over the past decade.
Typically residing in wetland areas, along rivers, streams, oxbow lakes, swamps, and mangroves, the fishing cat’s survival is at stake.
WFFT’s specialists were astonished to find that the discovered kitten had recently parted ways with its mother only hours before being spotted by the family. This abandonment was deemed unusual for the species, leaving experts puzzled.
Enamored by the rare find, the family, given permission, decided to temporarily adopt the kitten and affectionately named him Simba. The bond between Simba and the family became evident as they awaited the possible return of the mother.
Regrettably, the mother never reappeared.
Simba, having been nurtured by the family, matured into a splendid fishing cat. While he currently enjoys a healthy life, his continued well-being is crucial. The WFFT emphasizes that poaching and retribution killing pose significant threats to fishing cat populations in Thailand, with an alarming 84% mortality rate.
Simba’s rescue and survival are nothing short of a miracle, and his existence holds paramount importance for the preservation of his species. As sentient beings, animals contribute significantly to the delicate balance of nature.
