Martha Stewart is a well-known personality with a worldwide fan base, but she was recently criticized for a social media post that many found “insensitive”.
The 83-year-old lifestyle mogul received praise for her appearance in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue earlier this year, but her latest Instagram update didn’t generate the same enthusiasm among her audience.
On August 29, Stewart shared a photo from a cruise along the east coast of Greenland. The image shows her enjoying cocktails with the caption: “End of @swanhelleniccruises’ first ever Zodiac cruise into a beautiful fjord on the east coast of Greenland. We actually caught a small iceberg for our cocktails tonight”.
Stewart’s post was likely intended to be humorous, but was quickly criticized by her followers, who found the use of an iceberg to symbolize her drink insensitive. Many comments poured in expressing concern over her reference to a “small iceberg” amid the ongoing climate crisis. One user noted: “Martha the ice caps are melting, don’t put them in your drink”.
Another follower commented: “I admire Martha and her extravagant lifestyle in general, but it seems a bit insensitive to me when rich people enjoy cocktails with icebergs while the planet suffers”. A third commenter humorously pointed out the absurdity of the situation: “While the climate is warming due to the greed of a few, billionaires are vacationing on melting icebergs and skimming them for cocktails. Sounds like something out of a dystopian novel!”
One user echoed a similar sentiment, expressing disappointment: “Global warming and melting polar ice caps, but we need glacier ice for cocktails?! I’ve been a fan for years, but to see this when you can barely afford groceries is disheartening”.
Earlier this year, Stewart made headlines when she confidently posed in swimwear for the cover of Sports Illustrated. She revealed details about her preparation for the shoot, explaining: “I didn’t starve myself, but I did give up bread and pasta for a couple of months”. She also highlighted her commitment to fitness, mentioning her regular Pilates workouts.
In a keynote speech at an event in Las Vegas, she highlighted how positively her cover was received and how it inspired women of all ages to feel empowered: “The feedback was incredibly encouraging and showed me that if I can do it, they can do it too”.
