In 2019, The ADEM Show took the stage on America’s Got Talent and faced an intimidating challenge. Simon Cowell, usually known for his harsh reviews, appeared more irritated than ever. At the start of the episode, Cowell’s frustration was evident as he dismissed previous acts with comments like “If it’s not as good as what we’ve seen before, it’s hard to be excited” and “Way too generic”. The bar for originality has been set high.
Kyrgyzstan’s ADEM Show had the daunting task of standing out in the 14th season of this long-standing talent competition. Cowell, visibly disillusioned, sighed and remarked: “It’s been a really strange day”. But the moment ADEM Show appeared on stage in elaborate costumes inspired by the video game Mortal Kombat, Cowell’s demeanor changed. The group’s unexpected appearance and refusal to introduce themselves piqued his curiosity.
The performance began with an electrifying effect that immediately broke Cowell’s boredom. The crackle of electrical currents was followed by the group’s eerily synchronized robotic dance moves, accompanied by fast-paced electronic music. Cowell’s fellow judge Julianne Hough was stunned by the precision of her routine.
As the performance continued, ADEM Show demonstrated her extraordinary and somewhat disturbing skills as a contortionist. They bent and twisted their bodies in disturbing ways, creating the illusion of dislocated limbs and severed heads. Gabrielle Union reacted with a mix of shock and discomfort, exclaiming: “Oh!” Meanwhile, presenter Terry Crews, unable to contain his reaction, screamed and turned away in disbelief at the amazing performance.
