Her growing belly raised suspicions, but when doctors finally saw what was inside, they were left in disbelief

Many people go through personal struggles that often remain hidden from others. Allison Fisher, a 20-year-old woman, went through such a struggle but was ultimately given the chance to start a new life. Let’s explore her incredible journey and the challenges she overcame.

In 2020, Allison began experiencing what she initially thought was simply stomach pain. However, the discomfort, combined with irregular periods, became more concerning over time.

Allison avoided going to the doctor for a full year due to a long-standing fear of doctor visits. This fear stemmed from past experiences where she was often confronted with comments about her weight during doctor appointments, making her hesitant to seek medical attention.

Over time, Allison’s condition worsened and a large growth on her abdomen became so hard that it was nearly impossible for her to stand or drive.

The turning point came around Christmas 2022, when the mass began affecting her breathing. That prompted her to seek medical attention, prompted in part by her mother’s cancer diagnosis in 2021. Dr. Martin Martino, a gynecologic oncologist at Ascension St. Vincent’s, made a shocking diagnosis: Allison had a massive ovarian cyst weighing 104 pounds, filled with about 46 liters of fluid.

Removing the cyst required a complex surgical procedure involving a team of specialists, including pulmonologists and cardiologists. Using advanced robotic technology, the surgical team successfully removed the cyst and untwisted Allison’s left ovary, ensuring she would still have the ability to have children in the future.

After surgery, Allison felt grateful for her “second chance” at life. Simple things became milestones for her: she could see her feet again, stand longer, and participate in activities that were once too difficult. Now working on bariatric surgery, Allison remains hopeful and determined to make the most of her new opportunities.

Reflecting on her experience, Allison spoke about the challenges that plus-size people often face when seeking medical care. She encouraged others not to let fear stop them from prioritizing their health and expressing their concerns.

Allison’s new outlook on life includes pursuing activities she previously thought were out of reach, such as driving and cooking. She emphasizes the importance of facing fears, seeking medical attention in a timely manner, and embracing change.

Her story is a powerful reminder that it is never too late to seek help, take control of your health and seize the opportunity to start over.
