“The Rifleman” (1958–1963) is a popular Western, known for its father-son relationship and valuable life lessons. However, the series also had some historical errors. For example, in “End of a Young Gun,” Lucas McCain wears Wrangler jeans, which weren’t available in the 1880s, when the series is set. The 1950s-style hairstyles also didn’t fit the Old West setting.
The casting was also interesting. Chuck Connors, who was initially unsure about playing Lucas, was ultimately chosen after the producers saw him in “Old Yeller.” Chuck’s son, Jeff Connors, made a cameo, as did Johnny Crawford’s brother, Bobby. Both were nominated for Emmys.
