In today’s digital age, most couples meet through dating apps, but not too long ago, finding love often meant stepping out into the real world. This has even applied to celebrities, who have faced the same challenges in their quest for true romance.
Take actress Maureen McCormick, for instance. Known for her role as Marcia Brady on The Brady Bunch from 1969 to 1974, she first laid eyes on her future husband at a concert, but it was in church where she truly captured his heart.
Despite her iconic role, McCormick’s journey post-Brady Bunch was fraught with difficulties, including battles with addiction and mental health. “I’ve been through a lot of tough times, but I take all these experiences and I learn and grow from them”, she shared with People in 2016. Her struggles included stints in psychiatric care and rehab as she sought guidance through prayer.
Amid her challenges with drug use and the pressures of her acting career, she met a man at a concert who would eventually become her husband. In her autobiography, Here’s the Story: Surviving Marcia Brady and Finding My True Voice, she recounted: “I turned around and saw this guy behind me. He had dark hair, a big frame, and chiseled features. I looked straight into his eyes and thought: ‘This is the man I’m going to marry'”.
Determined to get to know him better, McCormick began attending the same Bible studies as Michael Cummings and even sat next to him in church. Her efforts paid off, leading to their first date and a lasting connection. Cummings reflected on their relationship, noting: “She’s been very honest with me from day one. I never worried about her going back to her old ways because I thought whatever happened, we’d deal with it”.
Although their relationship was described as “fast and passionate”, it wasn’t without its difficulties. McCormick’s ongoing struggle with addiction often created distance between them, but Cummings remained steadfast. As she noted in her autobiography, he committed to their relationship, believing in her potential for growth.
Now, with their son born in 1989, the couple is set to celebrate their 37th wedding anniversary on March 16. McCormick attributes their enduring love to their shared faith: “We both had faith that our love, despite all our problems, was real, strong, lasting, and worth staying together”.
It’s heartening to see a celebrity couple who have weathered life’s storms together, demonstrating that true love can endure through the toughest times.
