Izabele Lomax, a woman from Maryland, was spending her day browsing social media when she came across a video that made her heart stop. Upon closer inspection, she realized it showed her breastfeeding in public.
The clip she found was a screenshot of a previous post. A stranger had filmed Lomax breastfeeding her baby and criticized her for not covering up. The post, shared in a breastfeeding group, included a caption expressing disbelief that another woman would record a video of a mother breastfeeding her child and post it online.
Lomax felt a strong connection to the post as it showed her in a vulnerable moment. “I was like, ‘That’s me!'” she recalls, and was shocked to learn she had been filmed without her consent while enjoying a day at the beach.
The person who posted the video claimed she was not trying to shame breastfeeding mothers, but rather criticized Lomax for not being more discreet, expressing discomfort at the idea of exposing her son to bare-breasted women in public.
In the video, Lomax is seen sitting under a beach umbrella breastfeeding her baby, unaware that she is being filmed. The carefree day she had spent with her fiancé, baby and parents took a turn for the worse when someone decided to judge her behavior.
Not one to remain silent, Lomax addressed the situation directly on social media. In her video response, she pointed out that the woman had walked past her several times and could have chosen to speak to her rather than film her without her knowledge.
Lomax stressed that she had not stopped breastfeeding her child, and she questioned why the woman felt the need to sexualize breastfeeding in front of her own young son. “If you had time to record me and post about it on Facebook, you could have taken a moment to educate your son about breastfeeding,” she said in her passionate response.
Lomax received support from her followers, prompting the original poster to delete the video. Many commenters expressed disbelief at the woman’s decision to publicly shame another mother for breastfeeding. One commenter noted, “Who does this woman think she needs protection? Just explain to your child that the woman is breastfeeding her baby and move on.”
Others noted that the baby’s head covered any visible nudity, reinforcing the idea that there was nothing inappropriate about the situation.
