My mother was the kindest and wisest person I knew. She dedicated her entire life to me, always saying that there was nothing more important than family and love.
But then, on her deathbed, she said something that changed my life forever. She was lying in a hospital bed, barely breathing. I held her hand and whispered:
“Mom, everything will be okay, I’m here”. She looked at me with teary eyes and whispered words that I will never forget:
“Love… I’m sorry. I never told you the truth about my father”. My heart stopped.
“My father? Mom, what are you trying to say?” But her tears were already flowing.
“He… he’s not the man you think he is. And he never was.” I didn’t understand.
“Mom, please tell me the truth.” She looked at me one last time, as if gathering the strength for her final words.
And then she said something that completely destroyed everything I thought I knew about my life:
“Your real father… is dead. And the man you call father… he was the reason for his death”.
