Steve, a farmer hailing from Scotland, managed a modest herd of dairy cows. One day, he noticed that Lila, usually his highest milk producer, was unexpectedly dry. After consulting with the vet and confirming Lila’s good health, Steve decided to investigate further by observing her behavior near the forest’s edge where she grazed with the herd.
To his surprise, Steve observed Lila occasionally slipping away into the forest during the evenings. Intrigued, he followed her discreetly one evening. Sure enough, Lila led him to a secluded clearing surrounded by trees.
There, hidden away from the herd, was a small calf. It became evident to Steve that Lila had given birth weeks earlier and had been keeping the calf hidden in the forest clearing, possibly to protect it from the rest of the herd. It took Steve a few moments to grasp the situation fully. Each time a calf was born, Steve usually separated it from the adult cows until it was old enough to join the main herd.
Steve realized that Lila seemed discontent with the usual farm routine. Reflecting on this discovery, Steve made a decision. He chose to allow Lila to remain with her calf, adjusting his farming practices to accommodate their natural bond and behavior.
