The average lifespan of a tortoise is between 10 and 80 years. That’s why they mostly enjoy those last years because they’re too old for everyone. But always fast an exception, in this case it is Nigrita. She got babies for the first time in her 80s which means the years don’t really represent anything. This news resonated around the world and everyone is overjoyed, especially because they are an endangered species.
Since 1928, this Galapagos tortoise has been in the same place, in the zoo.
Zoo in Zürich, Switzerland, is home to this amazing tortoise. This is also the largest species of tortoise that comes from the Galapagos. Its weight varies up to 900 pounds, and when it comes to age, they can exceed 150. They are among the animals that have the potential for a very long life. The only sad thing is that they are an endangered species and there are no more than ten of them in the wild. The reason for this is mainly predators who serve as food and people to whom greed is a very close concept.
Nigrita is currently in a zoological program that is trying in every way to extract this species and provide them with a continuation of life. Everyone was thrilled to see that Nigrita gave birth to babies for the first time, as many as nine of them. She won the hearts of many people.
Jumbo is a father who is only 54 years old. Most turtles from the Galapagos do not give birth until after the age of 40, which means that Nigrita had the right time.
Robert Zingg from the zoo said that she is the oldest animal that is there. He emphasized that she laid eggs at a good age. According to him, each of her babies has about five ounces. They still must have a lot of patience for the babies to reach their mother.
