For a single mother in California, the path to financial freedom led to a surprising solution: she moved her 15-year-old daughter into a tiny house!
Shalina, a single mother, discovered a unique debt relief strategy by drastically downsizing her living space. Before joining the tiny house movement, she and her daughter Katie lived in the expensive Bay Area, where rising rent costs were becoming a growing burden.
The dream of building her own home, inspired by frequent TV and online posts about tiny houses, prompted Shalina to take action. Her father, a developer with a one-acre property in Sacramento, provided the perfect location for her project.
Equipped with her father’s tools and the will to succeed, Shalina spent two years building the small house herself. When it was finished, she and Katie moved into their new, compact home.
Outside, Shalina added a fence, patio and shed. Inside, she designed a practical layout where the kitchen, although small, has essential appliances such as a 20-inch stove, an oven, an 18-inch dishwasher and an almost full-sized refrigerator. Shalina focused on maximizing the living space by keeping the kitchen minimalist.
With clever storage solutions, including pull-out drawers and fold-down cabinets, Shalina ensured the tiny house was ready for every need. Despite its small size, she found a way to keep her home functional and organized.
An avid collector of unique items, Shalina enjoys visiting flea markets, thrift stores, and estate sales to find curios. Even though living small typically favors minimalism, she continues to value her finds and make the space unique.
“Even with the lessons of downsizing and minimalism, surrounding a small space with things you really love can make it feel like home,” explains Shalina.
Shalina worked from home four days a week and created a small office nook with seating and standing options. The bathroom is equipped with a bathtub and houses the washing machine and dryer.
Privacy was crucial, so Shalina designed locking doors for her and Katie’s bedroom. Katie’s room is particularly personalized and features a dressing table, posters, photos and fairy lights that reflect her teenage style.
Shalina’s dream home, built for around $35,000 using a mix of recycled materials and DIY labor, has proven to be a worthwhile debt relief strategy. The tiny house has brought Shalina and Katie closer together and made their compact living space both functional and special.
