Woman covered in over 800 tattoos, often called a “monster”, struggles to find a job as employers refuse to hire her

Despite being labelled a “freak” and facing harsh societal judgement, a mother of two continues to inspire her children with her unwavering commitment to self-expression. Melissa Sloan, a 46-year-old Welsh woman, embarked on a body art journey that has earned both the admiration of her children and the contempt of the world around her.

For over 26 years, Sloan has been a passionate tattoo collector, covering her body with nearly 800 pieces of ink. Her dedication to the craft has made her a social outcast, limiting her job opportunities and subjecting her to verbal abuse every time she leaves her home.

Sloan embraces her status as an outsider, viewing her obsession with tattoos as an inseparable part of her identity. She is unapologetic about her lifestyle, even carrying a tattoo gun and getting tattoos in unusual places, such as her car.

Tattoo studios have refused to work with her, but her partner helps her get three “prison-style” tattoos done each week, reinforcing her commitment to the art. This decision has had serious repercussions for Sloan, including being rejected for a job cleaning toilets because of her appearance, as well as facing constant public scrutiny through pointing, staring, and verbal attacks.

Nevertheless, Sloan remains steadfast in her belief in being authentic, proudly stating: “I can’t fit in with people because I like to be myself and I will always be myself”.

Her strength is also evident in her dedication to her children, ages 8 and 10. Despite the social stigma she faces, Sloan continues to attend school events, where her children’s peers are exposed to the harsh realities of their mother’s appearance. While some worry that children will drift away as they get older, Sloan encourages their curiosity about tattoos by allowing them to explore temporary designs and imagine a future in which they can embrace their own creative expressions.

While her choices may seem extreme to some, Sloan’s journey highlights the challenges of societal acceptance and the enduring value of personal authenticity. Despite the obstacles, she remains a powerful symbol of resilience and individuality, teaching her children the importance of being true to themselves in a world that often struggles to accept difference.
