Meet Spike, a venerable 14-year-old English Springer Spaniel. Like many dogs of his vintage, he grapples with the limitations that come with age. Recently, Spike faced the challenge of a second stroke, which left him struggling to navigate the stairs.
Regrettably, this predicament meant that Spike could no longer partake in one of his beloved activities, nestling in bed with his family, a cherished tradition he had upheld since his early days as a pup.
Catherine Morris, Spike’s dedicated owner, shared the heartwarming story: “The first night we had him, we closed the stair gate and went to bed. He whined for a couple of minutes before jumping over the gate in the dark and trotting up into my parents’ room and straight up onto the bed! And that’s where he slept from then on”.
The family’s bedroom, perched on the second floor, became inaccessible for Spike due to his weakened condition. Nevertheless, Spike’s relentless determination to reach his favored spot led his family to take action. They eventually decided to block off the stairs to prevent him from attempting the ascent.
Instead of merely accepting the situation, they devised an endearing solution: if Spike couldn’t come up to sleep with them, they would gladly descend and spend the night with Spike on the lower level.
Now, on a rotational basis, family members set up a pull-out couch downstairs, ensuring that Spike is never alone during the night, all in a bid to provide him with companionship.
Upon returning from university, Catherine encountered her parents’ new sleeping arrangement, a testament to the unbreakable bond they share with Spike. She noted: “They’re absolutely inseparable. My dad calls him ‘old bean’, and they’re always chatting away. My dad will also bring Spike his water and food to the sofa and feed him by hand to make sure he gets his medicines and keeps his strength up”.
Though Spike may no longer possess the vigor of his youth, one thing remains constant, the enduring love of his family. Through this selfless act, they make it abundantly clear that they will go to great lengths to ensure Spike’s twilight years are filled with happiness and comfort.
“We love our old boy so much and are so glad to have him in our lives”, Catherine expressed. “Hopefully, we have made up for his not-so-good start in life by providing all the love in the world.”
