A canine with a remarkable knack for trading leaves for treats has become the heartwarming sensation that’s melting the hearts of dog enthusiasts far and wide.
Meet Negro, a clever dog residing on the campus of the Diversified Technical Education Institute of Monterrey Casanare in Colombia. For the past five years, the faculty has diligently ensured that Negro is well-fed and has a safe place to sleep at night. However, this hasn’t deterred the resourceful dog from devising a truly ingenious method to acquire his favorite treats, a move that seems almost human in its intelligence.
Negro stumbled upon a little store located on the campus, a place that offered delectable cookies, and one day, something incredible caught his eye. He noticed that students were handing over peculiar green objects (money) in exchange for these mouthwatering delights.
So, in a stroke of brilliance, Negro decided to find his own green pieces, which, in his case, took the form of leaves. He enthusiastically gathered these leaves and proceeded to carry them over to the store, his tail wagging in excitement, signaling his desire for a tasty cookie.
Teacher Angela Garcia Bernal shared this remarkable tale, saying, “He would go to the store and watch the children give money and receive something in exchange. Then one day, spontaneous, he appeared with a leaf in his mouth, wagging his tail and letting it be known that he wanted a cookie.”
The shopkeeper couldn’t possibly turn down such an endearing request. And so, with that, Negro’s unique system of leaf-based currency was born. Now, he makes a daily pilgrimage to the store, with a leaf firmly clasped in his mouth, ready to make his purchase.
“He comes for cookies every day,” store employee Gladys Barreto attested. “He always pays with a leaf. It is his daily purchase.”
